Being Active

Our aim is to challenge and support children of all ages and abilities to develop into individuals who are enthused to live a healthy and active lifestyle.

Teachers plan and deliver a broad and balanced programme of study that challenges and supports children of all ages and abilities to develop into individuals who are enthused to live a healthy and active lifestyle. We follow the ‘Real PE Curriculum’ which is fully aligned with the National Curriculum PE requirements and develops the key abilities children need to be successful within PE and Sport and across the curriculum. Learning is organised into six units with one unit based on each of the six Real PE cogs.

Each term, every class has a main learning unit which is taken from the CORE REAL PE curriculum. Additional units of work are to be run alongside these units. Teachers use their 90 minutes (at least) per week to manage these each term. In Years 3 and 4, children also have swimming lessons which are provided in partnership with First Strokes, Ipswich.

With mixed classes in Reception / Year 1, the Gym units of work correlate to their Topic Long term plan with Unit 1 delivered during Year A and Unit 2 during Year B. For all other units of work (all year groups), the units remain the same regardless of the calendar year.

Links are made with other subject areas when appropriate and provisions made to inject further opportunities for physical activity throughout the school day through the use of the Daily Mile and / or interactive resources in the classroom. Throughout their journey, the children will experience a range of activities and sports such as:

  • Orienteering
  • Football
  • Tag rugby
  • Cricket
  • Netball
