Art and Design

Being an Artist or Designer

Our aim is for our children to develop a life-long love of art and to become confident artists, comfortable in expressing their thoughts and emotions through the medium of art to the best of their ability.

Art is a key part of our broad and balanced curriculum.  It gives our children fantastic opportunities to express themselves creatively. Through art, children will gain the knowledge and skills to investigate, experiment and create their own pieces of work, expressing their own personalities and experiences. Our children will have the opportunity to be creative and develop their skills using a range of media and materials.

Transient art using natural materials

Through art our children will learn to:

  • Take inspiration – by studying artwork from a diverse range of artists
  • Master Techniques - of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles and 3D work
  • Develop ideas - the opportunity to explore, develop, reflect and evaluate different creative ideas

These skills are applied to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth; for example, by sketching historical artefacts in detail or researching geographical locations to support their work on landscape painting. Many areas of art link with mathematical ideas of shape and space; for example when printing repeating patterns and designs and thinking about 3D shapes to support structures.

Key questions for pupils in art and design:

Develop Ideas - Can I evaluate and improve my own work?

Master Techniques - Can I improve different artistic skills?

Take Inspiration - Can I evaluate/take inspiration from artists, architects and designers?
